Join Dr. Jeffrey Hoch, an award-winning UC Davis professor in the Department of Public Health, for a faculty Lunch & Learn on how he uses Kritik to incorporate peer review into writing assignments, helping students develop stronger critical thinking and communication skills while reducing the time instructors spend grading and providing feedback.Sandwiches and beverages will be provided for in-person attendees. Description

Writing assignments are valuable for developing students’ critical thinking and communication skills, but grading them and providing meaningful feedback can be time-consuming, especially in larger classes.

Dr. Jeffrey Hoch will share how he uses Kritik in his UC Davis courses to involve students in evaluating research, analyzing real-world problems, and providing structured feedback on one another’s work.He will walk through examples of his assignments, rubrics, and course setup, along with lessons learned from implementing peer review. The session will also demonstrate how Kritik helps instructors establish clear expectations for AI use and review how students develop their written work, including revisions and interactions with AI.

During the session, we’ll cover:

• How peer review can improve student learning while reducing grading and feedback time.
• Examples of assignments and rubrics used in UC Davis courses.
• Practical considerations for introducing and managing peer assessment.
• How to establish AI-use policies and better understand students’ writing processes.

Faculty from all disciplines are welcome. The session will include time for questions and discussion about how these approaches might work in other courses.
